The Time of Dreaming the World Awake is a portrait of a place, a landscape of possibility.
This body of work is based in a small region in Southern France. It centres on the story of Bugarach, the ‘magic’ mountain connected to a Mayan prophecy, which indicated that the world as we know it, would end on December 21st, 2012. The prophecy claimed that this date would mark the beginning of a new era for humanity, a new and sublime future and some believed that Bugarach was to be the first bastion of this modern Arcadia.
For Yvette Monahan, this sense of possibility and palpable charge allowed an allegorical landscape full of portents to exist, one that was beyond the visual reality.
Nothing happened last December, which was to be expected. Despite this, Monahan realised how attractive it was to believe in the possibility of an idyll, even if it only existed in her mind.
BIO
Yvette Monahan is a Dublin based Photographer who works with stories of both people and place.
Yvette has recently completed an MFA at the University of Ulster under Paul Seawright and Donovan Wylie. She will be exhibiting her most recent project The Time of Dreaming the World Awake in Belfast, Dublin and London throughout 2013. Yvette works as one half of seanandyvette photography with her husband Sean Breithaupt. They both work independently but often come together to collaborate.
Yvette also co-founded South Studios, a 9,000 square foot space that doubles as a rental studio for film and photography shoots as well as providing a community for creative freelancers.
